Something old, something new Something glorious through and through.
Against a background inspired by the timelessness of old Manila, the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority and Fraternity celebrated Mu Week last August 24-28 in a fanfare lined with traditional and fresh activities, all true to the spirit of Mu: dedicated, relevant, solid.
Festivities kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the BSLR lobby led by Dr. Zorayda Leopando (μΣΦ 1975), Dr. Virgilio Genuino (MΣΦ 1969) and Dr. Orlino Talens (MΣΦ 1969), coincident with the unveiling of the impressive exhibit Museo 2009: Timeless Glory. This was followed by the annual Fiesta at the Hut, where members of both the Sorority and the Fraternity partook in a hearty lunch.

A life-sized tophat, abaniko, timepiece and cane. Two escutcheons bearing the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority and Fraternity’s pillars and another coat of arms for AFTG. Two valiant seals. Indeed, Museo 2009: Timeless Glory has left no stone unturned.
Tuesday, August 25, saw the first of the service-oriented activities prepared for the week. Batch 2013 of the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority turned over a donation for the Burn Unit of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). The autoclave given, considered a necessity for the sterilization of equipment in the Burn Unit, came from the proceeds of the fundraising party BURN that was held last February 20 at the Hierarchy Club, Bonifacio Global City. Dr. Glenn Genuino (MΣΦ 1990) thanked the Sorority for “thinking of the Burn Unit, especially since it is one of the most overlooked sections in the hospital.”

A joint Splurge and Sizzle was also held Tuesday night at Crobar, Malate, in proud and hearty congratulations for Mu’s Batch 2009, who had just successfully taken on the medicine licensure exams.
The fourth leg of ImMUnity, the Sorority’s free vaccination program and also under the Service pillar, was held on Wednesday, August 26, at the PGH Atrium. Fifty-two (52) Hepatitis B and 46 typhoid vaccines were administered for the benefit of the UP College of Medicine (UPCM) students and PGH employees.

Meanwhile, organized with the Fraternity were activities upholding the Scholarship pillar: a Basic Life Training seminar in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) on Wednesday, August 26, which was open for all students of the UPCM; and on Thursday, August 27, a timely lecture in cooperation with Astra Zeneca, titled Pharmacovigilance and Counterfeit Medicine, was held at the BSLR-East. Resource speakers focused on the current situation of pharmaceutics in the country and on what should be done to ensure safe and proper drug use.
August 27 also saw the diamond anniversary of the founding of the Sorority, commemorated with none less than a triumphant flourish. A thanksgiving anniversary mass at the PGH chapel was celebrated by Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, Archbishop of Manila, and was followed by a Foundation Day Dinner at the Alvior Hall. The Executive Council for Fiscal Year (FY) 2009-2010 was inducted during the program, and the event, well-attended by the alumni sisses, was a fitting reunion rightfully captured during the official 75th-year pictorial.

But the best was yet to come.
In a stunningly extravagant display of sisterhood, service, scholarship and leadership, the Sorority staged BRILYANTE: The Empowered Woman, on August 28 at the NBC Tent, Bonifacio Global City. With an acclaimed director and a stellar cast of designers and models, BRILYANTE was a success not only as a fashion show but as an information campaign for the fight against cervical cancer.
Capping the week on a high note was Club Med, a party held also at the NBC Tent. Brods and sisses toasted the night away in remembrance of the jubilant past and in welcome of yet another year worthy of Mu’s annals. All for the glory! |
