For 75 years, the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity has prided itself on its tradition of molding fine young men in their noble transformation of becoming dedicated physicians, and inculcating a culture of excellence, nationalism and humanity. The Fraternity has good reason to be proud and to make its anniversary an occasion for celebration—in its 75 years of existence, the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity has established a reputation as one of the most accomplished and relevant student organizations, firmly upholding the ideals of Brotherhood, Leadership, Scholarship and Service.

The Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity is a brotherhood that encompasses generations. Since 1933, the Fraternity has inducted 1,648 brothers into its fold. Every member of the Fraternity is assured of a lifetime spent in the company of pioneers, scholars, teachers, researchers and leaders in the field of medicine. Nowhere can the medical student find such an extensive yet closely-knit network of physicians who can serve as guides, mentors, and role models. The bond that members share is exemplified by the phrase “All brods are equal”, and as such, brods who are still in their early years of medical school share a spirit of camaraderie and fellowship with even the most senior doctors.

Mu Sigma Phi is also proud of its members who have exemplified the pillar of leadership. Among the members who have served as heads of state and leaders in the health profession are Hon. Jesus Azurin (Batch 1941), Minister of Health (1981-1986); Hon. Antonio Periquet (Batch 1959), Secretary of Health (1992); Hon. Alberto Romualdez, Jr. (Batch 1965), Secretary of Health (1998-2001) and UPCM Dean (1984-1988); Hon. Manuel Dayrit (Batch 1976), Secretary of Health (2001-2005); Dr. Antonio Montalban (Batch 1969), PGH Director (1994-1997); Dr. Orlino Talens (Batch 1969), Vice-Chancellor for Administration – UP Manila; Dr. Serafin Hilvano (Batch 1971), current Chair of the Department of Surgery, PGH; Carmelo Alfiler (Batch 1972), present PGH Director; and Dr. Eusebio Kho (Batch 1960), Twenty Outstanding Filipinos Abroad; Awardee and Dr. Patricio Reyes (Batch 1971), Director, Alzheimer’s Disease and Cognitive Disorders Program at Barrow Neurological Institute-St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center, Arizona. The Fraternity endeavors to inculcate this same drive to lead in its members; thus, regardless of their actual official titles, each brother of the Mu Sigma Phi is a leader in his own right.

The Fraternity breeds in its members a selfless commitment to public service. Members reach out to underserved communities through medical and surgical missions, which are held on a weekly basis. The Mu Sigma Phi also established the MUbility Amputee Support group in cooperation with the PGH Department of Rehabilitation Medicine; this organization provides disabled individuals with wheelchairs and prostheses, as well as a network and venue for them to be empowered in overcoming their disability. The Fraternity also founded the Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health, a national competition that aims to increase awareness of key health issues, and the first of its kind in Asia. For its contributions to civic welfare, the Fraternity has been recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Youth Organizations of the City of Manila (1989, 1990, 1991), by the Office of the President as Most Active NGO Partner in Luzon (1997), and the Outstanding Youth Organization of the City of Manila (1997). Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity is also the 10-time Most Outstanding Organization in UP Manila (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008), and was elevated to the Hall of Fame for Most Outstanding Organization in UP Manila.

The brothers of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity extend this warm and sincere invitation to one and all, to join in the Fraternity’s 75th Anniversary festivities. The year-long celebration will culminate on December 17, 2008 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel, where the Fraternity will hold its Grand Fraternity Ball and Alumni Homecoming. In homage to the Fraternity’s past achievements, and in optimistic anticipation of its future, the 75th Anniversary has been titled A Priori, Ad Infinitum…From the Beginning, Until the End of Time.
